Oct 25: The Magician’s Nephew, chapters 1-10
On Sunday, Oct. 25, we will discuss The Magician's Nephew, chapters 1-10. As you likely know, Greta Gerwig's film adaptation of this book will be released in 2027. There has been a lot of conversation about the movie, so now is a good time to refresh on Lewis's story. I have been considering how Uncle Andrew and Jadis are dramatizations of ideas in chapter three of The Abolition of Man: "When all that says 'it is good' has been debunked, what says 'I want' remains" (p77-78). Michael Ward aligns The Magician's Nephew with Venus in The Narnia Code chapter "Apples are from Venus" (p105-115). Kathryn Lindskoog in Journey into Narnia provides a benediction based on The Magician's Nephew:
Like Digory, we fear the loss of our securities and loves.
Like Polly, we want to be good sports and good friends.
Like Frank, we wish to return to a simpler way of life.
Like Strawberry, we would like to escape drudgery and grow wings.
In all of this, protect us from wrong use of gold bells and silver apples.
Create in us clean and obedient hearts.
At our meeting in November, we will discuss chapters 11-15.
